How to Destroy Hamas Without Destroying the People of Gaza
Gazans are not Hamas. That's the current catchphrase.
It's uttered by those who genuinely care about the people of Gaza and don't want to see them suffer for what Hamas has done. But also, sadly, by the morally bankrupt, who don't want to see Hamas held accountable for its heinous terrorist butchery, mostly because like Hamas, they hate Jews.
Here's The Problem in a Nutshell
Hamas must be forfeit for its vile action. It must cease to be. It is not a "resistance" organization as the "useful idiots" of the fringe left claim. Gandhi was resistance. Mandela was resistance. Hamas is terrorism and extremism at its worst.
But, Hamas, with the backing of Iran controls Gaza. Hamas won an election in 2006, but later violently overthrew the Palestinian Authority in 2007. So it's kinda sorta elected, but also kinda not.
In order to destroy Hamas, Gaza will likely have to be invaded, and that in turn puts countless lives of Gazans who do not support Hamas at risk. And undoubtedly will also lead to a high level of Israeli casualties too. Urban warfare is extremely difficult to control.
Israel is preparing to send in ground troops. They've called up 300,000 reservists. There's 2,000,000 people in Gaza, and close to half of them are children.
Hamas is counting on a high body count of innocent civilians to cause an uproar against Israel. To them, the people of Gaza are pawns in a PR campaign designed to force the Jews into the sea.
Hamas's goal is to create an Islamic state like Iran's, where girls can be beaten to death for not wearing a head covering, all while killing Jews.
But, Israel cannot let go of what Hamas has done to its innocent people. And to the almost 200 men, women, little children, and Holocaust survivors that Hams kidnapped and dragged back into Gaza to use as bargaining trips. And, they did much worse than kidnap to many of these people. Sexually assaulting many of them before and after taking them across the border.
Hamas is no patron saint.
Hamas destroyed the agrarian economic engine of Gaza that Israel left in place when they walked away from Gaza so that the people of Gaza would be entirely dependent on Hamas.
When the "useful idiots" call Gaza an "open aired prison" they neglect to mention that it is Hamas that turned it into one. Not Israel. Not Egypt, but Hamas.
I'm no mid-east expert. I spent 3 weeks in Israel as a 9-year-old in 1971. The friend of the family that taught me to weight lift while I was there was killed on the first day of the Yom Kippur War by a Syrian anti-tank missile. His wife was 7 months pregnant at the time. His little girl never knew her father because of the refusal of the Arab world to accept that Israel was there to stay.
In my 30 plus years of working as an investigator, I saw enough of man's inhumanity to man to last 50 lifetimes. I've spent over 10 years helping businesses, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies reduce their staff's risk of work related violence. So Here's How to Destroy Hamas Without Destroying the People of Gaza
So how can Hamas be destroyed without destroying the innocent people in Gaza?
There's some precedent to this approach. Albeit on a much smaller scale.
When Louis "Lepke" Buchalter's killing spree put the entire syndicate at risk, he was pressured into surrendering. He and his team were then prosecuted which took away the government's interest in bringing down the entire syndicate. The same thing when Al Capone's war against other mobsters led to innocent civilians being killed which brought in the feds and jeopardized the rest of the syndicate. Capone was pressured into surrendering. And the rest of the syndicate was spared.
Too esoteric?
Think about the Wizard of Oz and the Wicked Witch's skywriting call for Dorothy to surrender to keep the witch from destroying Oz.
Israel should announce that it will forego a ground invasion, and stop its bombardment of Gaza, provided that within 72 hours Hamas releases all of the hostages, and all of Hamas surrenders to Israel to face prosecution in Israeli courts for its slaughter of Israelis.
The US and its allies can introduce a resolution at the UN calling on the leaders of Iran, Qatar, Russia, and China to tell Hamas they're done. Release the hostages, and surrender to face the consequences, and in exchange there will be no more civilian deaths in Gaza.
Should Hamas refuse to surrender or release the hostages, and the ground invasion commences along with airstrikes, then the world can point to Hamas and its patron Iran for the destruction of Gaza and the certain to follow deaths of innocent Gazans.
With Hamas out of the way, Arab states led by Egypt and Saudi Arabia can determine a path forward for the people of Gaza that includes liberty, independence, and a violence free future.
And as for Israel. It should agree to do so, because the return of the hostages and the end of Hamas are its goals. They can prosecute them in a court of law without running afoul of the court of public opinion.
After this happens. Israel's government can dissolve itself and be replaced by a government that recognizes the time has come to make peace with its neighbors so that never again will there be terror like they have just experienced.
